Fashion junkie: Neneh Cherry

The musician and style icon Neneh Cherry will always be associated with Buffalo Stance, her 1989 cover of a B-side by the band Morgan McVey. She is the stepdaughter of the jazz trailblazer Don Cherry, and the daughter of the West African percussionist Amadu Jah and artist Moki Cherry. Neneh began singing with the punk band the Cherries at age 16 after leaving school at 14. Since then she has worked with the Slits, Cameron McVey (now her husband), Michael Stipe, Portishead's Geoff Barrow, Youssou N'Dour and Gorillaz. She has finished an album with her new band Cirkus, which can be heard at cirkustent.com.

What do you wear when relaxing at home? Stockings and high heels, while waiting for my hubby.

What do you wear at the weekend? Denim.

What is your biggest fashion mistake? Flares.

Which are your favourite shops? I love Dalston Junction and Borough Markets as well as Dover Street Market and b store (020-7499 6628).

Which is your favourite shop abroad? Opening Ceremony in Howard Street, New York.

Which are your favourite bars? The Good Mixer (30 Inverness Street, London NW1; 020-7916 7929) and Gondolen in Stockholm, which has an amazing view over the city.

Who makes the best cashmere? The Scots.

Heels? Manolo Blahnik (020-7352 8622).

Trainers? Adidas, Puma and Nike.

Handbags? Who needs a handbag? I put my money in my bra.

Where do you buy your underwear? Other than Agent Provocateur, M&S.

Who makes the best jeans? Levi's (levis.com) and Acne (acnejeans.com).

Which cosmetics would you be lost without? Palmer's Cocoa Butter and Coconut Hair Grease (etbrowne.com) and Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour cream (elizabetharden.com).
