There is an uneasy reality behind the formation of this... 'group' &, indeed, in the making of this first (& hopefully not last) cirKus album. The truth will probably come out along the way, but to begin with, it's probably best for all concerned that it remains covered in a thin yet murky veneer.

The group consists of: Karmil, Lola Moon, Burt Ford & Neneh Cherry

Ok, so now we've got your attention...

Karmil did some music; Lola sang along, Burt joined in & then Neneh was 'accosted' & enlisted. They wrote & recorded an album together, called themselves cirKus, formed Tent Music to avoid any ugly music business dealings &, hopefully, the rest will be history.

Initially they have showcased bits of the record on their website (cirkustent.com). A more traditional release is imminent.

The 'group' are currently touring under the collective banner of 'Lay Low'. 'Lay Low' is an evening's entertainment (although not always at night) that is held generally in nightclubs but isn't a standard nightclub affair. They perform & DJ usually for over 3 hours & during this 3 hours attempt to make you cry, laugh & dance... this far with considerable success.

These are troubled times, cirKus are troubled people... Can you relate?

Neneh Cherry remembers 1990 as ''intense.'' It was the year her debut CD, Raw Like Sushi — propelled by the top 10 hit ''Buffalo Stance'' — earned her a Grammy nod and garnered her the distinction of appearing on EW's premiere cover. But a scary thing happened amid the applause: ''I got slightly insecure about my work,'' she says. Following the release of 1996's Man, the Swedish native retreated to her hometown, where she continues to live with husband/collaborator Cameron McVey and daughters Naima, 22, Tyson, 16, and Mabel, 9. Now a 40-year-old grandmother, Cherry has kept a low profile while recording several unfinished albums and making obscure cameos on CDs by Groove Armada, Gorillaz, and brother Eagle Eye Cherry, among others.

In February 2004, the part-time DJ — who recently played Scotland's Live 8 concert with Senegalese vocalist Youssou N'Dour — resurfaced at European clubs and festivals with a new band, cirKus. ''I call our music broken soul. It's kind of left field with the trip-hop feeling of pretty raw beats.'' Their work has inspired Cherry to plan a solo comeback. ''I have something to offer from a different angle than before. I'd really like to work with Danger Mouse — his music is hip-hop but avant-garde in a cool way.'' Who says grandmas can't rap?
